30.06.2023 | Çağatay BALCI , Erol Başaran BURAL

Summary

The subject of the use of intelligence as a tool by states in counterterrorism is mostly discussed in academic studies. However, the number of studies on the use of intelligence by terrorist organizations is quite low. In Turkish literature, there is no academic study prepared within the scope of the use of intelligence as a tool by terrorist organizations. This study, which was prepared based on this deficiency in the literature, aims to eliminate a part of the said deficiency. The main problem statement of the research is whether intelligence is a tool that ensures the survival of terrorist organizations. The aim of this study is to reveal the importance of intelligence for terrorist organizations and that it is one of the most important tools for organizations to survive. The case study method was used in the study. By examining the case studies of Al Qaeda and the IRA/PIRA, it was aimed at better understanding the importance of intelligence for terrorist organizations. As a result of the study, it has been determined that intelligence as a tool is one of the factors that ensure the survival of terrorist organizations, and recommendations are made for future research.
